5 Things You Should Tell Yourself to Stay Fit & Healthy At Work

This New Year, the adage “Health is Wealth” should be given more importance especially in the workplace. “Bawal magkasakit” as we say. It is even more challenging now that one sick day could hold office goers back and force them to double their workload for the sake of catching up. Sometimes, it’s the stress levels from working so hard that forces the employee to sacrifice their health altogether.

Most employees are susceptible to weight gain because they have more access to fast foods. Another factor to consider is stress eating. The sudden overweightness often impairs their work function because their body isn’t supplied with the right amount of nutrition from a well-balanced diet. There would be occasions in which they’ll lack the energy to perform tasks that they’re normally good at. They’ll feel tired and groggy – almost as if they’re sick every day.

Fortunately, staying fit and healthy at work isn’t as impossible as it may seem. Here are a few things you could tell yourself in order to acquire a better you:

Old you: “I work hard, I deserve to eat what I want.”

New you: “I deserve to be feel good and look good. I will eat what is good for my body.”

Be mindful that not all foods are created equal in nutrition and energy they provide.  Reward your body with food that are not just tasteful but will also repair your body. When your mind and body work hard, all the more you need to provide it with proper nutrition so it can function well and serve you well. Make sure you’re eating clean. Food high in sugar like cake, pizza or coffee with milk and sugar may give you quick satisfaction or energy boost but are not good for your body in the long run. Treat your body with nutritious food including lean proteins and vegetables and it can serve you well and productive for a long time.

New you: New you: “I’ll pay attention to my water intake”

Old you: “I can snack on chips – I need the energy.”

New you: “I’ll snack on fruits, plain crackers or cut vegetables – I need to stay healthy.”

Give away those bag of chips that you just bought from the nearest convenience store. Opt for cut fruits, some plain crackers and vegetables that you can bring from home instead. They give you enough sugar boosts to curb your sugar cravings, and they are healthy enough you so that you’re giving your body proper nutrients.

Old you: “I’ll buy food outside. It’s more convenient.”

New you: “I’ll take time to make my own meals and pack my lunches”

While some employees face the stigma of bringing packed lunch to work, it’s always best to brush those smug remarks off. It’s not good to sacrifice your health for the sake of “fitting in”. Get to slicing and dicing some vegetables and bring them with you. One of the main benefits of packed lunches is that you actually know what’s inside your food.

Old you: “I need to finish this in two hours!”

New you: “Stressing out will only make me lose focus. I’ll take a break.”

Stress will eventually take its toll on you and you’ll lose focus on more important details. You might even find yourself wanting to eat your feelings out. This is why taking a break is important. If you’ve worked non-stop for a couple of hours, just pause everything for a few minutes and breathe. Pamper yourself for a short while by standing up, stretching and reading about the good things in this world.

Of course, most of these are easier said than done. If it’s going to be difficult for you to stay committed to a healthier work lifestyle, you may want to consider signing up for a weight loss program.
